2nd Canoe Search news:
As directed by the HROCC board in May, Bob and Josh travelled to Santa Barbara June 4-5 to paddle and examine a Bradley Lightning Unlimited OC6 for sale by Ka Nai’a Outrigger Canoe Club. The intent was for HROCC to purchase the canoe if determined satisfactory as authorized by board approval and a 42 to 2 vote of the membership.
They decided the club should not purchase the Bradley for $18K despite the fact that it is an excellent boat, a fast, easy-to-steer boat in nearly new condition. But it is too similar to our other unlimiteds, a delicate race boat rather than a versatile, durable “club” boat for racing, instructing, and paddling every day. Despite the strong beautiful hull, the ama and the canopy’s decks were too light to provide the durability we wanted. All-in-all, too fragile to live on the beach.
While researching the Bradley, Bob and Josh discovered another OC6 at a neighboring club for sale, a Mirage, and determined that it is in good condition. While not authorized by HROCC to pursue purchase of any other canoe, they checked with Santa Barbara OCC about the possible purchase of their Mirage. They made a suggested offer of $9K FOB Santa Barbara or $9,500 delivered to Hood River. The SBOCC board decided to “…hold out for more money.” They are looking for $10K minimum but want to list the canoe to see if they can get more than that. We are now in a waiting period to see if they will ultimately accept our offer depending on HROCC board and club approval.
Treasury report: Current balance $11.7K after the purchase of Makani Hula

Fridays Tips & Technique Practices 5pm
For our existing members, Tips & Techniques offers a smaller group paddle session with a focus on technique. We are on-hand to answer questions & give coaching tips. You can come as often as you like throughout the season! Try a different seat or if you’re interested in learning to steer, come on down. Be sure to RSVP on Team Cowboy so we can have enough steers and coaches. The roster will be sent out the evening before.
Beginner/New Paddler Sessions/Steers Practice
Our steers and coaches are excited by the participation levels in our Beginner/New Paddler sessions. These 3 FREE introductory sessions are geared to those who would like to become members.Although these sessions are free, we welcome donations & are encouraged by the many new paddlers who have contributed to our PFD/Paddle fund. Learn how to get the canoes in & out of the water, the basics about paddle stroke, canoe & paddler etiquette and safety on the water. We “graduate” our new members to regular paddle practice times after approximately 3 sessions and try to find a mentor, and they are encouraged to come to Tips & Techniques practice as much as they’d like to gain confidence in the wind and waves.
MEMBERS: If you know a potential new paddler who would like to join HROCC, please have them visit our website to sign waivers & get on our mailing list so that we may schedule them accordingly. http://hoodriveroutrigger.com/New-Paddlers

Next race is Rooster Rock June 29th followed by Gorge Outrigger Race July 13th. We will try to keep the same crew lineups for both races as much as possible so you have two consecutive races together. For race questions contact Dan Bubb or Bonnie Fromm.
The Small Boat Group has had a turnout at all of the local Viento to Hood River Vortex Series races put on by Carter Johnson with many local paddlers taking top spots in most categories. The first Vortex race was on April 27nd with some of the most challenging spring conditions in the Gorge. The second race on June 1st had almost double the turnout with 44 paddlers. The 3rd and last race of the series will be on June 22nd. This will sure to be an exciting race, as Kai Barlett will be here paddling the new Vega surf ski. Professional racer Austin Kieffer will also be in attendance along with Kenny Howell form Epic Surfskis. You don't want to miss the finish of this race!
The Small Boat Group:
We had great paddler participation in the PNWORCA winter series with local small boat paddlers placing in the top 10 in many races. This will be the first summer as an organized small boat paddling group and we have been drawing between 15-18 surfski & OC paddlers with a wide range of skills from beginner to expert with a shift from flatwater to downwind paddling.
Weekly paddling sessions are Thursdays at 6 pm and have been shifted from the Event Site to the Springcreek Hatchery when conditions permit.
Additional coaching sessions on Tuesdays at 6 pm that will focus on paddling fundamentals as long as there is interest.
New paddlers, please feel to reach out to Jeff or Van with any questions or specifics you want to learn. Demos from Think, Epic, Fenn, and Carbonology are coming soon. Look for posts on the Small Boat Facebook page for upcoming events.
When you login to Team Cowboy this year, sign up for ANY time slot and the scheduler will email the roster to you the night before. Please add a comment on your rsvp if you are flexible so we can all help each other get out there, paddle and have fun! It’s numbers like 18, 24, & 30 we are striving for to fill the canoes! In the unfortunate situation that paddlers exceed seats or more likely steers, the scheduler will “randomize" for a given practice and you will be notified only if you are taken off the roster. So occasionally be flexible, or bring your OC1, OC2, be a team player - remember that your steers and schedulers are...volunteers!
